There’s still not enough snow yet but all we need is a couple of good dumps and the season will be underway. Perhaps we will be able to ski by the weekend of the mid-winter Christmas party, but either way come along and meet up with friends you haven’t seen since the end of last season. The party will be at the mountain lodge, which is always a great venue for social events. See the Club Captain’s report for more details.
Chris Fotherby.
President
There are still a substantial number of members who haven’t paid their subs for the season. We’d like these outstanding amounts paid ASAP. (Pretty please with snow on top).
A big thank-you to all those who helped man the stand. With live entertainment and free beer next door, it wasn’t a particularly arduous task. I’ve never seen people so keen to stay that extra few hours!!! There was an extremely positive response from potential 'clubbies', and when the snow arrives I’m sure we’ll have quite a few new members to welcome.
This is the next huge event on the DSC calendar. It’s on the weekend of the 25th & 26th of July, with Christmas dinner at the mountain lodge on the Saturday evening. This will potentially be the first weekend of the ski season. Santa promises sackfuls of snow, so send your bookings to Barbara now. If there’s no snow for skiing, then a walk to the top of Ruapehu followed by a snow-dance at the summit may be on the agenda. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing lots of people down there.
It has been decided to offer a discount of 10% off the regular non-member rates for groups of 10 or more people. This is to encourage use of the huts during those quieter periods.
The following two inter-club races are happening over the first two weekends in August. I'm hoping we can get a team together for each of these events, so if you're keen to give it a go, give Natalie a call. All you have to do is get round a few poles. The emphasis is on fun, and if you get around more than four gates you're already superior to the NZ Winter Olympic team. It would be great to have a DSC team entered.
Christiana Derby
Saturday August 1
Organised by the Christiana Ski Club, the Christiana Derby is open to Men's, Women's and mixed teams. The entry fee is $15 per person including the privegiving party on the Saturday night. There is also a snowboard event for "individuals".
Ngauruhoe Trophy
Saturday August 9
Organised by the Ngauruhoe Ski Club, the Ngauruhoe Trophy is open to teams of five people, with a minimum of two women members. The entry fee is $45 per team, which also includes the prizegiving function on the Saturday night. I’m under the impression there’s no snowboard section for this one - sorry.
These two events are the perfect warmup for the main event - The Downhill Ski Club race weekend on September 5&6. Put this in your diaries now, because I promise it will be the best weekend of the season. For more details on any of these events, contact Natalie now.
Or anyone who can swim 50m (just kidding). We’re looking for someone with the ability to inspect and certify the effectiveness of the mountain lodges septic tank. If you know of anyone with knowledge in this field (pool?) please contact Chris.
We’re looking for people to cook up at the mountain lodge between mid-September and mid-October. If you or anyone you know is interested in being the Cook for two to four weeks, contact Chris.
Once again we are offering Hut Leader training to anyone interested in the running of the mountain lodge. Depending on the demand, this will be happening on the 25th & 26th of July. This coincides with the mid-winter Christmas party. With the added attraction of a possible guest appearance by the Fire Dept for a hut inspection, it’s definitely a weekend not to be missed.
