August 1999

Dear member

It's Here!

As I write this, the snow is falling on Ruapehu. Turoa is planing to open later this week. RAL is working hard to open the upper Whakapapa areas as well, and so add to Happy Valley which has been open for a number of weeks now.

Mid-winter Christmas Function

After late postponement, the mid-winter Christmas function on the mountain is still on for the 7-8 of August. Please book and come along dressed either "Christmasy" or with a retro '70's look. Even better, combine the two and dress as Santa with flared pants. Keep up with that training, as I'm sure that there will be opportunities to ski before then. I look forward to seeing you there whatever you are wearing.

Race weekend

The two dates for the race weekend have been allocated in case the conditions are not conducive for the first date. If the first does go ahead and there is enough enthusiasm for the second as well, then the extra one could be run to make up for a few that have been missed over the last couple of years!

Club financial situation

The Downhill Ski Club is solvent with approximately $4,800 of funds currently available. As members can appreciate, the income over the last couple of years has not been outstanding, while the fixed costs (insurance, rates, DoC charges, etc) have still had to be paid. With a good season this year, and the full support of its members, the Club's reserves will build up. The committee is taking all possible steps to minimize expenditure while still providing the best for its members.

Ruapehu Lodge Cook

Depending on demand, and in an effort to conserve Club funds, the committee may not appoint a cook this year. The food would still be supplied, and sample menus prepared with ingredient amounts and instructions, but members would be asked to take on the role of cook.

Subscriptions

The great opportunity for ex-members to rejoin with no penalty costs or rejoining fees will end in a couple of weeks.
If you haven't already done so, then please pay your subscriptions as soon as possible.

Booking Officer

Dave Meek is the new Booking Officer. Home answer phone & fax - 09 473 5353, mobile - 021 635353, home address - 242 Glenvar Rd, Torbay.
Please respect the Meek family's need for sleep, and do not ring too late at night!

National Park Freezer

Until the freezer is replaced, please buy your own bread and milk and submit the receipts for these to the committee and you will be reimbursed.

Club Web Page

The Club has a site on the Internet at www.iol.co.nz/dsc/ . This site has news along with information about the club. If you have Internet access, go to this page and put your email address in. You will then be emailed when the page changes.

The newsletter and club rules are now online as well. You could book with the online booking form but as David Meek doesn't have email you'll have to make do by faxing. There is a list of committee contact numbers and links to related sites such as the ski report at www.snow.co.nz or www.whakapapa.co.nz .

If you have any prospective members, point them to the information on entrance fee, subs and accommodation rates. There are some photos of the lodges, which give an idea of what they are like.

Mike Fitzmaurice, who wrote the pages, would like to set up a members links page. If you have any skiing related pages you have created in your own home page with your ISP, then email Mike at admin@iol.co.nz and he will include them for you.

Fuel hose

If anybody has about 3m of three quarter inch fuel hose that they would like to donate to a good cause, then the Club could make very good use of it on the diesel fuel system of the generator. Even though the mountain lodge is on mains power, the generator is maintained ready for use.

Committee

If you have any suggestions or queries, please do not hesitate in contacting any Committee Member.
