May 2001

Dear Member

Welcome to my first presidents report and the first wintry blast of the 2001 season. It is May 15 and snow and cold winds are sweeping up the country.

I hope you have all bought your dual mountain seasons pass's now that we are the closest hut to the Turoa/Whakapapa snow highway. The season pass idea has been as beneficial to clubs as they have been to RAL. Your committee has taken careful advantage of this better outlook following some good management by the previous committee through some tough seasons. (Which means we have spent some hard earned savings on improving the lodges.) As one long standing member reminded us at the AGM, club members need value for money in their accommodation. So our main priority was the National Park lodge this year although we have also made some improvements to the mountain lodge. National Park is being used more during the summer as a transit stop or base for central plateau activities. Most improvements have been low budget so far, thanks to the full hut numbers at working bees and the generosity and bargain hunting of committee and members.

I would appreciate any comments on what you would like to put on our action and priority list.

Please support your club with early subs as a pleasant surprise awaits you in 2001.

See you at the mountain.

Ross Sutherland

2001 Subscriptions

Enclosed are the subscription requests for 2001. The AGM voted that the subscriptions remain at last year's rates with a single membership being $130, and a family membership $260. As the entrance or joining fees have been waived for this year, now is the time to rejoin if you haven't paid for a couple of years.

Please note that any members who have not paid their subscription by 15 July 2001 will not receive any more newsletters.

$200 new member prize

Once again a prize will be drawn from the names of new members and those existing members who introduced or nominated them. This year's prize is $200 worth of accommodation at either lodge. Bring along a new member and be into win. Sorry, rejoining ex-members aren't eligible.

Working bees

The two working bees were a great success with a lot achieved by those who assisted. The lounge area at National Park has changed dramatically (check out the Club web page for photos) thanks to Ross and his keen band of amateurs. The lounge and conservatory are now one. With the newly purchased lounge suites, it will be very cozy.

The storeroom has been converted into another lounge for those who want to escape from the noise or who want to create it. Hopefully those two groups won't want to be in there at the same time. The Meeks' painting team have spruced up the lobby and the far end of the hallway.

Slat bunks are progressively replacing the wire bunks. The Simpson chain saw gang has installed a new door from the ski workshop into the wood shed. This now means that you don't have to go outside to get the firewood. Please use the chopping block in the wood shed to prepare kindling and not the steps or the pallets on the floor. The switch in the ski workshop operates the light.

The Fitzmaurice landscaping team have done beautification works under the sign at the front of the property that DoC would be proud of. The down pipes have been extended under and away from the lodge to ease the flooding problems in the carpark.

At the Mountain lodge, the French doors have been painted and other minor maintenance work has been done.

Club activities

Working bee - 2/4 June (see below)
Mid Winter Christmas dinner - 18/19 August
Race weekend - 1/2 September

We look forward to seeing you at these.

Other dates

University ski swap - 19 May
2001 Snow Show at Greenlane Showgrounds- 16/17 June

Working bee - Queens Birthday Weekend 2-4 June

To tidy up and finish off the major works done this year, one more working bee is required at National Park before the season starts. There is enough work for one or two days, so why not come down and work for a day, and then walk or explore for another day. Please ring Dave Meek if you are interested so that the committee knows how many to cater for.

Mountain lodge cook

In anticipation of a bumper season, the committee is seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to be the cook at the Mountain Lodge this winter. Remuneration for duties is a dual mountain season pass and free board and lodging for the period determined by the committee. Provisionally, this will be from mid August to mid September.

If you are interested, or know of somebody who is, then please contact Natalie Meek for more information.

Committee members

If you have any suggestions or queries, please do not hesitate in contacting any Committee Member.
