July 2001

Dear Member

The snow is deep, both lodges are operating, and all mountain facilities (nearly there) are working at Whakapapa and Turoa. All you need now is time off school or work to make the most of it. With the most snow for quite a few years, this season is looking like being a long and successful one.

Lodge bookings

Enclosed is a copy of the booking form in case you don't have access to the Club web page. All bookings should be faxed to David Meek well before you intend to stay.

Bookings at National Park are already heavy for August and September, so be in early. Remember that the Mountain Lodge is also available.

Mountain cook

The Club has secured the services of a very good cook starting from the mid-winter Christmas dinner (18/19 August) until 7 October. This will depend on snow conditions and the RAL facilities operating, and may be brought forward or extended.

Check with David Meek to find out the cook status. If you are planning to stay on the Mountain, please book ahead to allow for food to be ordered and delivered.

Club activities

Mid Winter Christmas dinner - 18/19 August
Race weekend - 1/2 September

Snow cam

The Club is working with David Scott of snow.co to install a snow camera on the mountain lodge. This site has a link from the Club page, and the cameras around the various skifields can be viewed. RSC has a camera looking up the Waterfall Express chairlift, and we are hopeful that the view from the Club will show as many of the west side lifts as possible. Installation is planed to be completed by 5 August, so check out the site soon after this. The Club page may also have additional links set up. Keep an eye on it for updates.

2001 Subscriptions

There are still a few members who haven't renewed their membership. Its not too late with the subscriptions remaining at last year's rates with a single membership being $130, and a family membership $260. As the entrance or joining fees have been waived for this year, now is the time to rejoin if you haven't paid for a couple of years.

Please note that for any members who have not paid their subscription, this will be their last newsletter for 2001. Also, could life members please advise Ivan Findlay if they still wish to receive newsletters. As life members, you will still receive AGM notices.

$200 new member prize

Once again a prize will be drawn from the names of new members and those existing members who introduced or nominated them. This year's prize is $200 worth of accommodation at either lodge. Bring along a new member and be into win. Sorry, rejoining ex-members aren't eligible.

Working bees

A big thankyou to all of those people who have assisted at the working bees this year. Under Ross Sutherland's able direction, a lot work has been done to make the lodges more comfortable, especially at National Park. After a few lean years with low income and low expenditure, the committee has spent wisely on the refurbishments. If this season's income is high, then next year will see even more work done.

Snow Show

The Club was very fortunate to be offered some space for reasonable rates at this years Snow Show. The show was not as big as previous years but it was still a success. The Club had some new members join as a result of it. Welcome to the Club and we look forward to seeing you down at the mountain.

Thank you to Mike Fitzmaurice who set up the stand and organised the roster. Thanks also to those who helped on the stand, and I hope you made the most of the free admission and other goodies being given away.

Enclosed are a few spare flyers from the show for you to put up at your workplace, on notice boards, to hand out to interested people when you are skiing, and to use for a hundred and one other things. If you would like some more, then please contact Grant McTavish. The more new members the better, and don't forget about the $200 new membership prize.

Avalanche Awareness Training

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council is again running avalanche awareness training courses around the country in August and September. If you are interested in attending, please contact Grant McTavish and he will send you a brochure.

If you have any suggestions or queries, please do not hesitate in contacting any Committee Member.
