October 2001

Dear Member

The ski season is over for another year with the snowfalls improving again from previous years. I hope that everyone was able to get down to the mountain to experience the snow and make use of the Club and their dual mountain passes. The improved season has certainly helped rebuild Club funds. This doesn't mean that we can be complacent however, and we must continue to attract new members and increase the both lodges' usage throughout the year.

Downhill Ski Club 40th AGM - 4.00pm, 25 November 2001, St Chads Church Hall, cnr Taumata St & Sandringham Rd, Auckland

With the end of the skiing year comes the AGM. As per last year, we are once again using St Chads Church Hall as the venue for the AGM. A map is on the rear of the enclosed AGM agenda notice to assist you.

An agenda is enclosed, along with a committee nomination form. All of the current committee positions are up for election and new members are always welcome. Being on committee is a good way of being involved in making decisions about your Club. Next year there are plans to continue with the internal upgrade of National Park, and the committee will welcome ideas on how to best do this. The committee meets about 8 to 10 times a year in the evening for about 2 hours at a time. Most of the organising is completed by the time the season starts, with the rest of the year just making sure everything is functioning normally.

After the AGM, the Club will be providing meat and sausages for a barbecue, and red and white wine. It would be most appreciated if you could please bring a plate of salads or sweets, and any other drinks you may like. Tea and coffee will also be provided. The barbecue will also be held at St Chads.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

2002 Club Subscriptions

As you can see from the AGM agenda, there are some motions to encourage the early payment of the subscriptions by offering accommodation credits if paid by 30 April. There are also motions to encourage new members and attract ex-members back to the Club. It is hoped that the example set by the RAL in selling the bulk of their 20,000 season passes early in the year at a reduced rate, will be adopted by Club members in paying their subscriptions.

Mountain cook

Many thanks to Corrina Meek for the fine cooking at the Mountain lodge this season. Also thanks to Natalie and David Meek for the food restocking runs and all of those people who helped transport it to the lodge.

Snow cam

Unfortunately the Club was not able to gain Department of Conservation consents to install the Internet snow camera. The Club will try again next year, as this is an excellent way to promote the Club.

$200 new member prize

This prize of $200 worth of accommodation at either lodge for next year will be drawn at the AGM from the names of new members and those existing members who introduced or nominated them.

Working bees

Work and party
As mentioned in the last newsletter, a big thank you to all of those people who have assisted at the working bees this year. Under Ross Sutherlands able direction, a lot work has been done to make the lodges more comfortable, especially at National Park.

The feedback has been very good about the changes so far. Next year, the committee is proposing to carry on with this good work with more internal painting, new carpets, new mattress covers and pillow slips, and a few small maintenance jobs planned for National Park. It is proposed to do only minor maintenance on the Mountain lodge, although the firewood will need restocking either using the chairlift or the helicopter.

These working bees are not hard and are done for the benefit of the Club and its members. Even if you cannot make it to all of the working bees, every little bit helps.

Remember, the meals are provided, accommodation is free, and you get an accommodation credit for every full day worked.

At this stage 2 or 3 working bees are planned between March/ May next year. Please assist where possible and support your Club.

Summer use of lodges:

Both lodges are very under utilised during the summer, and in attempt to change this, enclosed is a copy of this years summer program run by DoC. All of those who have participated in previous programs will agree that they are very worthwhile, and get you into areas of the Park not usually visited.

Also enclosed are mini-posters advertising the Club facilities during the summer season. Please put these up on notice boards at work, school, church, anywhere that will gain attention and hopefully a visit. If you have any suggestions of other organisations or groups that it would be worth sending information to, then please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Thank you for your continuing support of the Club and your continued support over the years to come. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.
