April 2002

Work Parties

We held the first working bee 16 & 17 March. We started to paint the roof at National Park but bad weather prevented finishing this job. A few of us went up to the mountain lodge and made some bedrooms bigger and brighter. The two bedrooms without windows now have windows. We also fixed some loose shingles, painted external doors and did other work.

There is still much to be completed. We have decided a third work party will be needed to complete what we have started. From replacing squeaky metal bunks at National Park to getting provisions on the chair lift to the mountain lodge there is something you can help with. Don't leave all the work to the same people all the time! Working bees are not compulsory at our club. Let's keep it that way.

If you can make it to one or both that would be great. Please ring David Meek (473 5353 or 021 63 5353) beforehand so that we can cater for you. You get a day's accommodation for each day's work you put in. If you would like to car pool email the club list.

2002 Club Subscriptions

You will have received your subs bill by now. You must pay by the end of April to get the accommodation credit. Send it off now so you don't forget.

$3,500,000 in New Developments

Happy Valley is now a third larger! Has a new 320 metre double chairlift and the relocation of two platter lifts. The ground has been smoothed so it can operate with little snow. Fifteen new snow guns take the total at Whakapapa to 25. This allows early opening of Happy Valley, snowmaking on the Rockgarden, Hut Flat and about Tower 3 on the Waterfall Express Quad!

Turoa sees an increase in snowmaking capacity on Clary's Track. There's been a re-fit of the High Noon T-bar and a major refurbishment and doubling of seating at the Giant Café.

Lost and Found

You may recall there was a cell phone found at National Park. This found it way to its owner after an email was sent out on the club list. Please use the email list if you find or lose any property.

Eivin's Café Fire

An electrical storm on 30/31 October last year started a fire at Eivin's Café. The building burnt to the ground. As yet rebuilding has not started but Marie assures me she will be open again before the skiing starts.

Eivin's remains

This demonstrates the ever present danger fire poses. Please make yourself aware of where the fire alarm points are in the event of a fire. Our National Park alarm is monitored and the local volunteer brigade will come but you must flick the switch first. All the bedrooms at National Park have new smoke detectors this year as a first line of defence. If you hear one go off nearby please investigate.

Newsletters via the Internet

As most members now have email and web access I intend to distribute newsletters this way. This will mean you get the news faster, more often, with colour photos and links to related sites. I wont have to fold as many newsletters and stuff them in envelopes and it will also save on postage. The newsletter will be posted on the club's web site and an announcement will be made via an email to the club list. You can join the list by sending email to downhillskiclub-subscribe@topica.com.

Season passes on sale

Season passes are now on sale at www.mtruapehu.com. The adult price is $279, Student $219 and Youth $149. The adult day pass is $56. More prices on the web. These season prices are only valid until April 30th but don't leave it to the last minute.
